THE WORK

by Perry L. Powell

They will wear the work
Away, water on stone
Till they have you
Where they want you
With just money alone.

They will keep the nerves
Awry, acid in the blood
Till they have you
Where they want to
Drowning in the flood.

They will tie the ribbons
Airtight, gauze on all your eyes
Till they have you
Where you go through
Living in approved disguise.

They will wear and work
Away, water on stone
Till they have you
Where they want you
At three a.m., alone.
